Fumani Mahlale, professionally known as Black Musashi, is a South African music producer, DJ, and electronic music artist renowned for his eclectic production style, innovative remixes, and immersive performances. Born in Malamulele, Limpopo, to Thronica and Steven Mahlale, Fumani was exposed to the dynamics of live music and event production from an early age through his father’s sound hire company. This early exposure provided him with a deep understanding of both studio and stage, including live sound, lighting, and the logistics and pressures of large-scale events.
Fumani’s childhood was shaped by both challenge and curiosity. His adolescence included boarding school, which presented him with difficulties that ultimately strengthened his resilience. Returning home, he discovered music as a powerful form of self-expression and creative exploration. By age 15, he began DJing and performing publicly, demonstrating talent while navigating insecurities and selfdiscovery.
Fumani Mahlale began producing music in 2009 during his first year at university, after being introduced to Fruity Loops by a friend. Performing under the alias Echo 12-Inch - inspired by his childhood nickname “Echo” and the 12-inch vinyl format - he developed a distinct Afro house and tribal house sound that would later shape his artistic foundation.
Black Musashi began his professional music career with releases under the Afrodesia MP3 platform, establishing his signature sound in the Afro house and electronic music scene. His tracks frequently charted within the Top 10.
Secured licensing deals with Soul Candi Records, contributing to their digital compilations and expanding his audience across South Africa.
Achieved national recognition when his track “3.0” was played by DJ Black Coffee, marking a significant early milestone in his career.
